I tried writing a udm picking up rider changes xthstartrider=1 but it does not pick up riders who have at least a start on the horse before the rider change today. Anyone have any ideas how to work around this?

XthStartRider is not the same thing as a rider change today.

(XthStartRider is how many times the horse has been ridden by today's rider.)

Likewise, XthStartTrainer is not the same thing as a trainer change today.

(XthStartTrainer is how many starts the horse has for today's trainer.)

If you are operating the program in playlist file mode, the way to work rider changes into a UDM is through the JSWITCH filter codes:

JSWITCH=1 require jock switch today
JSWITCH=0 avoid jock switch today
JSWITCH=N avoid jock switch in record
JSWITCH=Y require jock switch in record

If you are operating the program in playlist file mode, the way to work trainer changes into a UDM is through the BSWITCH filter codes:

BSWITCH=1 require barn switch today
BSWITCH=0 avoid barn switch today
BSWITCH=N avoid barn switch in record
BSWITCH=Y require barn switch in record

All preset filter codes are handled the same way in that the filter code itself doesn't matter. (When you want to work a filter code into a playlist file UDM you do it using the Preset Filter Tool.)

Here's a link to a previous thread that covers using the Preset Filter Tool to persist preset filter codes in playlist file mode UDMs:
